NJ’S Budget Crisis Halts ICE Center ... Forever
This fall marked the final milestone in a eight year journey for the building that was to be the ICE Wellness Center. MHA was told that there would be no funding going forward to complete the renovations for the building and that the building should be sold.
So another 365 days was added to an arduous eight year journey. Consumers and staff who have worked to make this dream a reality, have been given the news that they hoped would never come. The state can not continue with the funds for this project. So here we are in 2012, 8 years after that first award letter. MHA owns a building in the center of Pleasantville which is now going up for sale.
To all of you have called us with ideas and suggestions, offered support, met with politicians, voiced concern at public forums, and written numerous letters of support. We want to thank all of you for your tireless efforts on behalf of the consumers in this county. In closing, it saddens me that one of the most active and vibrant consumer groups in this state, was not given the opportunity to really shine with a center that they had designed and were hoping to call their own. Just imagine what ICE Members might have accomplished if they actually had a place of their own to offer training, groups, activities and to meet with clients in order to provide assistance they need. The greatest motivating factor of the ICE is the enthusiasm of the peer staff, ICE is an 'idea' that started in a Church basement that grew to become a recognized community resource.
